About

Patty Jean Judge is an American politician known for her service in Iowa state government. Trained as a nurse, she spent part of her career in public health before entering politics, where she gained experience in rural development and the agricultural sector, including work as a rural real estate broker and as a mediator during the agricultural crisis of the 1980s.

Elected to the Iowa Senate in the 1990s, she held leadership roles within her caucus and served on key committees such as Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Appropriations. In 1998 she became the first woman to serve as Iowa Secretary of Agriculture; she was reelected in 2002 and was noted for combining practical agricultural knowledge with public management.

In 2006 she joined Chet Culver’s ticket as the candidate for lieutenant governor and served from 2007 to 2011, taking part in disaster response efforts (notably the 2008 floods), child health policies, and initiatives addressing racial disparities in the prison system. In 2016 she was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, winning the state primary but losing the general election to the incumbent.

Beyond her public work, Judge maintains roots in southern Iowa’s rural community, running a cattle operation and participating in local organizations and advocacy for biofuel-related policies.
