About

Paul Douglas Fleischer was an American stage and film actor who also worked as a radio and television host. Before turning to acting he was a professional American football player and a sports columnist, and he made his Broadway debut in 1935. His major recognition came in 1946 for the role of the gruff Harry Brock in the comedy Born Yesterday, which earned him the Clarence Derwent Award.

In the postwar cinema he established a persona as a hefty man with a weathered face, often cast as middle‑aged, cynical or hot‑tempered characters, moving between comedy and drama. He appeared in notable films such as Letter to Three Wives (1949), Yellow Sky (1950), The Captive Heart (1952) and Executive Suite (1954), and worked with directors including Elia Kazan, Fritz Lang and Robert Wise. He also made a cameo in the Italian film Fortunella (1958), directed by Eduardo De Filippo.

He died suddenly in 1959 at age 52, shortly after being considered for another major role. His legacy lies in his versatility and strong screen presence, which made him a recurring figure in Hollywood productions of the 1940s and 1950s.
