About

Paul Davis Ryan is an American politician from the Republican Party, known for a two-decade career in the U.S. House of Representatives representing the state of Wisconsin. He became known as a fiscal conservative and as chair of the House Budget Committee, where he led debates on spending cuts and reforms to social programs.

Ryan was one of the architects of proposals known as The Path to Prosperity, often referred to as the “Ryan Budget” or “Ryan Plan,” which advocated changes to Medicare and cuts to Medicaid as part of a fiscal consolidation agenda. His political work also included involvement in health policy and participation in think tanks and publications on tax reform.

In 2012 he was selected as the Republican vice-presidential nominee on Mitt Romney’s ticket; the ticket was defeated in the general election. In 2015 he became Speaker of the House, a position he held until announcing in 2018 that he would not seek reelection, citing personal reasons and a desire to spend more time with his family.

A graduate in economics and political science, Ryan began his political career as an intern and campaign volunteer, establishing himself as an influential figure in budget discussions and conservative debate in the U.S.
