About

Paul Vaillant-Couturier was a French writer, journalist and communist leader whose activities shaped the 1920s and 1930s. A veteran of the First World War, he channeled his experiences into works such as La guerre des soldats and Trains rouges, which combine combat memoir and political commitment. He took part in the founding of the French Communist Party in 1920 and soon joined its leadership bodies, including the Central Committee and the Politburo.

As a journalist he played a leading role in the direction of L’Humanité, the party’s central newspaper, presiding over its editorial board in two periods (1926–1929 and 1935–1937). He also served as the PCF’s delegate to the Third Congress of the Communist International and spent working periods at the Comintern headquarters in Moscow, reflecting his involvement in the international communist movement.

He became involved in the cultural mobilization of the 1930s, helped found the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists, and maintained a steady literary and journalistic output. Elected to parliament in different legislatures, he returned to the legislature with the rise of the Popular Front in 1936. His premature death in 1937 cut short a career marked by the combination of political activism, journalism and literary production.
