About

Peggy Ann Garner was an American actress whose career began in childhood, making her one of the most prominent juvenile performers of the 1940s. She made her film debut at six and, over the decade, took roles in studio productions that culminated in critical acclaim for her performance as Francie Nolan in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945). For her work in 1945 she received the Juvenile Oscar at the 18th Academy Awards.

Despite early prestige, Garner struggled to establish herself as an adult film star; her leading roles declined in the 1950s, and she returned to the screen only sporadically. At the same time she built a career in theater and toured in plays such as Bus Stop, as well as appearing on radio programs and television series, collaborating with figures including Robert Altman.

Off stage and screen, she alternated her acting work with jobs outside the profession to support herself. Her legacy is chiefly tied to her childhood and adolescent years, when she showed dramatic range and won critical and public attention, remembered as an example of a child star who achieved a brief but notable prominence in classic American cinema.
