About

Peggy Fleming is a former American figure skater whose competitive career helped restore U.S. dominance in the sport after the 1961 tragedy. A two-time World champion (1966–1968) and the ladies' singles Olympic champion at the 1968 Winter Games in Grenoble, Fleming was the only American gold medalist at those Games, a victory widely noted for its technical polish and artistry.

Known for a style that incorporated ballet conventions and an elegant classical carriage, Fleming helped raise the artistic component of competitive programs. Her career included five national titles and memorable programs that influenced the aesthetic of women’s skating in subsequent decades.

After her amateur career she turned professional, headlined television specials, toured in ice shows, and from 1981 worked as a television skating commentator, including on Olympic broadcasts. Off the ice she became involved in winemaking and in advocacy for early detection of breast cancer after diagnosing and treating the disease herself in 1998.

Fleming’s legacy combines high-level sporting achievement, lasting media visibility, and a cultural influence on the image of women’s figure skating in the United States.
