Peter Victor Ueberroth is an American businessman and sports executive whose career is notable for leading the organization of the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and for serving as Commissioner of Major League Baseball in the 1980s. A successful entrepreneur in the travel industry, he built and sold First Travel Corporation, which became the second-largest company in the sector in North America, before moving into major public roles in sports.
As president of the Los Angeles organizing committee, he ran a Games distinguished by private financing, extensive corporate sponsorship, and strict cost control, producing a financial surplus that later funded youth sports programs and served as a model for subsequent events. For this success he received international recognition and awards from specialized media.
As MLB commissioner from 1984 to 1989, he implemented administrative and broadcasting changes, negotiated multimillion-dollar contracts, and imposed disciplinary measures against drug use and betting irregularities. His tenure was also marked by collective bargaining practices with club owners that led to labor disputes and later sanctions.
Ueberroth’s legacy combines a reputation as a manager able to marshal resources and modernize sports structures with controversies surrounding labor policies in professional baseball.
