About

Philippa York is a Scottish journalist and former professional cyclist, regarded as one of the most successful British road racers. A climbing specialist, she became known for her lightness and skill on mountainous courses, winning mountain classifications and podium places in multiple stage races.

Her professional career included historic milestones: she won the King of the Mountains classification at the 1984 Tour de France and finished the race in fourth place—a result unmatched by a British rider for more than two decades. She rode the Tour eleven times, finishing eight, and placed second overall in the 1987 Giro d’Italia, in addition to consecutive runner-up finishes at the Vuelta a España in 1985 and 1986.

She also won major stage races such as the Volta a Catalunya (1985), the Tour of Britain (1989) and the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré (1990). After retiring in 1995 she moved into journalism and had a brief spell as a coach with British Cycling. Her sporting career and subsequent professional reorientation form a legacy of significance for British cycling and its media coverage.
