About

Pierre de Coubertin, a baron born in Paris, was an educator, historian and the principal architect of the revival of the Olympic Games in the modern era. Influenced by the physical-education practices of English schools and driven by a belief in sport’s formative role, he worked to integrate athletic activity into schooling as a means of moral, physical and civic formation. His writings on education — including L'Éducation en Angleterre — reflected this concern for character formation and for modernizing school curricula.

In 1894 he organized an international congress at the Sorbonne that led to the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which he served as secretary-general and later as president, establishing the periodic schedule and structure of the modern Games. Under his leadership the 1896 Athens Games and subsequent editions gained worldwide prominence, despite early difficulties with the 1900 and 1904 events.

Coubertin left a lasting legacy by transforming sport into an organized international phenomenon and an educational instrument; his blend of classical romanticism and practical effort shaped the institutionalization of the Olympic Movement and the promotion of physical education in France and beyond.
