About

Pieter van den Hoogenband is a retired Dutch swimmer, known for his performances in freestyle events during the 1990s and 2000s. A three-time Olympic champion, he held world records in the 100 m and 200 m freestyle and is regarded as one of the Netherlands’ greatest swimmers, responsible for the only three Olympic golds won by a Dutch man in the pool.

His international career took off at age 18 at the Atlanta Games (1996) and reached its peak in Sydney (2000), where he set benchmark times and defeated top rivals such as Alexander Popov and Ian Thorpe, claiming the 100–200 m sprint double. In addition to his Olympic medals, he won European and world titles and earned several honors, including World Swimmer of the Year.

Also noted for his competitive longevity—he became the first swimmer to reach the Olympic final in the 100 m at four consecutive Games—Van den Hoogenband retired in 2008 and continued working in sport as a commentator and administrator, including serving as chef de mission for the Dutch Olympic delegation in 2024. The aquatic centre in Eindhoven bears his name, reflecting his legacy in Dutch swimming.
