About

Pina Bausch was a German choreographer, dancer and company director known for transforming contemporary dance-theatre. As head of Tanztheater Wuppertal, she built a repertoire of works that examined human relationships, memory and everyday life, often drawing on the experiences of the performers themselves and the cities she visited.

Her work is notable for blending movement, theatrical staging and narrative: choreographies such as Café Müller, Kontakthof and Nelken became international reference points for combining striking images, everyday gestures and recurring themes like the dynamics between men and women. This approach—gathering material in rehearsals and on tour—influenced generations of dancers and theatre directors.

Decorated with honors including the Kyoto Prize (2007) and the Goethe Prize (2008), Pina also drew the attention of cinema; her collaboration with filmmaker Wim Wenders produced the film-documentary Pina, released posthumously, which further increased her global renown. Her legacy endures in the continued work of the company and the lasting presence of her pieces in the international repertoire.
