About

Pope Leo XIII, born Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci, led the Catholic Church from 1878 to 1903; his pontificate accompanied the Church’s institutional transition into the 20th century. An academically trained cleric with doctorates in theology and canon law, he built a long diplomatic and administrative career: nuncio to Belgium, bishop of Perugia and cardinal before his election as pope.

His most notable work was the systematization of the Church’s Social Doctrine, initiated with the encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed the relations among labor, capital and human dignity in a context of rapid industrialization and social tension. That stance gave the Church a more active role in the social and political debates of his time.

Leo XIII also pursued internal reforms and maintained an active diplomatic engagement, seeking dialogue with European governments and institutions. His pontificate, one of the longest in the Church’s modern history, established him as a major influence and left a lasting legacy on Catholic social teaching and doctrine.
