Pius IX, born Giovanni Maria Mastai‑Ferretti, was Pope of the Catholic Church from 1846 to 1878, serving one of the longest pontificates in history. Initially regarded as a moderate reformer, his actions and later documents moved him toward a markedly conservative stance, emphasizing reaffirmation of doctrine and papal authority.
During his pontificate he proclaimed dogmas and promoted devotions: he defined the Immaculate Conception (1854), encouraged devotion to the Sacred Heart, and convened the First Vatican Council (1869–1870), which proclaimed papal infallibility. He issued encyclicals and bulls opposing philosophical and political currents he judged incompatible with the Catholic faith, as in the Syllabus of Errors (1864).
In the political arena, Pius IX was the last sovereign of the Papal States, confronting the Risorgimento and Italian unification, which greatly reduced the temporal power of the papacy. His pontificate was also marked by controversial episodes, such as the Mortara case, and by reforms and episcopal appointments that expanded the Catholic presence in several countries.
Beatified in 2000, his legacy remains the subject of intense religious veneration and concurrent historical criticism, reflecting nineteenth‑century tensions between authority and modernity.
