About

Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, was the son of Princess Anne of Great Britain and George of Denmark, and his brief life had political repercussions beyond his family. Born in 1689, his arrival was seen by Protestant supporters as confirmation of the succession established after the Glorious Revolution, strengthening Anne’s position as heir presumptive. His birth prompted the composition of odes and court celebrations, while Jacobite opponents used him as a subject of political ridicule.

Fragile health marked his short life: he suffered convulsions from childhood, likely resulting from meningitis and hydrocephalus, which prompted period treatments and interventions such as cranial trephination and the use of Jesuit’s bark. Despite physical limits, he received a formal education under the Reverend Samuel Pratt and appears in contemporary accounts, notably in the memoirs of the servant Jenkin Lewis.

His death at eleven precipitated a succession crisis that led Parliament to legislate an alternative Protestant line of succession, altering the dynasty’s course on the British throne and securing his place in the political history of the era.
