About

Luigi Maria, Count of Trani, was a prince of the Two Sicilies and the presumptive heir to the extinct Neapolitan crown after the death of Ferdinand II in 1859. The son of his father's second marriage, he belonged to the ruling family at a time marked by internal dynastic rivalries and the kingdom’s decline amid Italian unification.

He took an active part in the kingdom’s defenses against unification forces: he fought on the front lines during the siege of Gaeta and received military honors for his displayed bravery. The defeat of the Two Sicilies in 1861 and the fall of the regime turned him into the head of a deposed house, a role he retained until his death.

In 1861 he married Duchess Mathilde of Bavaria; the couple had a daughter, Maria Teresa, who later became linked to the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family. The marriage was described as unhappy, and Luigi’s personal life was affected by health problems and controversial accounts surrounding his final years.

As a figure of the twilight of the Italian monarchies, Luigi embodies both the military resistance to the changes of the Risorgimento and the familial and dynastic tensions that accompanied the loss of power by the old nobility of southern Italy.
