About

Henry, Duke of Cornwall, was the first surviving son of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, born on 1 January 1511 at Richmond Palace. His birth was celebrated as that of the heir apparent: he was granted the dukedom of Cornwall and baptized in a lavish ceremony with diplomatic gifts, reflecting the political and dynastic importance attached to the child at the Tudor court.

His premature death, on 22 February 1511, at only a few weeks old, had repercussions beyond the royal household. The royal couple’s failure to produce a surviving male heir deepened the succession crisis that, decades later, helped trigger Henry VIII’s break with Rome and the religious and political changes known as the English Reformation.

Despite the symbolic prominence of his birth — including tournaments and celebrations that marked the reign — no portraits of the prince are known, and the cause of his death was not recorded. His state funeral at Westminster Abbey underlines the prestige afforded to the brief role he played in the dynastic expectations of the House of Tudor.
