About

Prince Octavius of Great Britain was a member of the royal family, the thirteenth child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Raised in a household where the monarchs showed affection and were involved in their children’s education, Octavius was noted for a gentle temperament and affectionate company, especially with his closest-in-age sister, Princess Sophia.

At only four years old, his life had limited public visibility, but his early death in 1783 caused great consternation at court and deeply affected his parents, particularly King George III, whose grief is recorded in contemporary letters and memoirs. Contemporary accounts emphasize the family’s emotional reaction and the child’s presence in portraits and personal mementos.

Octavius died shortly after being inoculated against smallpox; sources differ on the exact cause of death, and official records note only the date and his age. He was buried in Westminster Abbey and later his remains were moved to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. His death was part of the family’s series of child losses that affected the lives of the king and queen.
