About

Ernst August IV of Hanover was the hereditary prince of Brunswick during the final monarchical period and later head of the House of Hanover from 1953 to 1987. Born into the high European nobility, he was the eldest son of the Duke of Brunswick and Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia; his christening in 1914 brought together several crowned heads and came to symbolize the end of the pre‑First World War era.

With the abolition of the German monarchies in 1918 he lost his dynastic titles during childhood; nonetheless he retained a prominent position among European royal families and at one point held dual British and German nationality, until the British titles he had were affected by the 1917 legislation. On becoming head of the dynastic house in 1953, he represented the historical continuity and the family’s patrimonial interests.

He first married Princess Ortrud of Schleswig‑Holstein‑Sonderburg‑Glücksburg, with whom he had several children who maintained ties to other European noble houses; in a second marriage he wed Countess Monika of Solms‑Laubach. His legacy is primarily dynastic and symbolic, reflecting the political transformations of the twentieth century on the former royal houses.
