About

Prince Friedrich of Hohenzollern‑Sigmaringen was head of the princely house of Hohenzollern and an active German aristocratic figure in the early decades of the twentieth century. Trained in economics, he served as an officer during the First World War on the Eastern, Western and Italian fronts, leaving active service in 1919. After his father’s death in 1927 he managed the family estates and adopted the title Prince of Hohenzollern, a move that put him at odds with the Prussian branches of the dynasty.

Politically conservative and deeply Catholic, he expressed criticism of the Weimar Republic. In subsequent decades he moved closer to the Nazi regime through traditional military affinities and family ties; in 1935 the regime even granted him the style of Royal Highness. In 1944 he was removed from Sigmaringen Castle, detained and had property confiscated on charges of collaboration.

In the postwar period he concentrated on restoring the family patrimony and was notably active in local charitable work: he founded an orphanage for refugees and war orphans affiliated with the Order of Malta. He died in 1965 and is remembered for his dynastic standing, estate management and involvement in regional Catholic institutions.
