About

Franz Josef II was the sovereign Prince of Liechtenstein from 1938 until his death in 1989. Born into the high Austro‑Hungarian nobility, he trained as a forestry engineer and initially managed the family’s agricultural estates, showing a strong interest in naturalist studies. He became prince in a period of early European tension and soon moved the princely residence to Vaduz, reinforcing the government’s presence within the small state’s borders.

During the Second World War he maintained a policy of neutrality that spared the country from occupation and, after the war, provided refuge to Russian military émigrés whose repatriation to the Soviet powers would likely have been fatal. In the following decades he guided the principality’s economic transformation, promoting the shift from an agrarian economy to a financial center with a very high GDP per capita.

Toward the end of his reign he gradually delegated powers to his heir, preparing the dynastic succession, and his long marriage strengthened European family ties through their five children. His rule is remembered for institutional stability, economic development, and the preservation of Liechtenstein’s sovereignty during turbulent periods in continental history.
