About

Prince Antônio Gastão of Orléans-Braganza was a member of the Brazilian imperial family and an active military figure in the early twentieth century. A grandson of D. Pedro II and son of Princess Isabel and the Count of Eu, he received an international education in Paris, Vienna and at the Theresian Military Academy, and served as a lieutenant in the hussars of the Austro-Hungarian army from 1908 to 1914.

When World War I began he refused to fight against France and, with permission from King George V, joined British forces through the Canadian contingent. He served with the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the Royal Flying Corps, reaching the rank of captain and serving as an intelligence officer and aide-de-camp to the commander of the Canadian Cavalry Brigade. He was awarded the Military Cross and allied distinctions.

Known as “the Soldier Prince,” he never married and left no descendants. He survived the conflict uninjured but died in an aviation accident days after the armistice in 1918, and was posthumously awarded the Legion of Honour. His legacy links the Brazilian dynastic tradition to allied military service during the First World War.
