About

Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Albrecht of Prussia was a Generalfeldmarschall of the Prussian army and, from 1885, regent of the Duchy of Brunswick. Born into the high Prussian nobility, he belonged to the royal family—son of Prince Albert and nephew of Emperor William I—and pursued a military career from 1847, taking part in decisive nineteenth‑century campaigns such as Prussia’s wars against Denmark, Austria and France.

As an officer he distinguished himself in key battles of the Austro‑Prussian War (Skalitz, Schweinschädel, Königgrätz) and in the Franco‑Prussian War, helping to consolidate Prussia’s position in a unified Germany. His appointment as regent of Brunswick in 1885 resulted from the period’s political maneuvers that excluded the Hanoverian heir, and made Albrecht a central figure in the duchy’s administration during the imperial era.

Married to Princess Marie of Saxe‑Altenburg, he had three children and divided his residence between Brunswick, Berlin and Kamenz. He died in 1906 at Kamenz Castle; his burial and the later fate of the mausoleum reflect the political and social ruptures that followed the major upheavals in twentieth‑century Europe.
