About

Prince Waldemar of Prussia (Joachim Friedrich Ernst Waldemar) was a member of the German imperial family, the sixth child of then Crown Prince Frederick and Victoria, Princess Royal of the United Kingdom. Raised in an environment of close ties between the British and Prussian courts, he was notable in childhood for his energetic temperament, playful spirit and affectionate bond with his mother, who regarded him as the family’s favorite.

Described as cheerful, independent and quick to learn, Waldemar became known for curious episodes and a fondness for pets—traits that contrasted with the usual discipline of court life. His open, good‑humored nature appears repeatedly in family memoirs and contemporary correspondence.

The prince’s life was tragically brief: taken ill amid a wave of family losses, he contracted diphtheria and died in Berlin at eleven. He was buried in the mausoleum of the Friedenskirche in Potsdam, where he rests beside other members of the imperial family, leaving the family memory of a vivacious child much loved by his parents.
