About

Prince of Prussia Oskar (Oskar Karl Gustav Adolf) was a member of the Hohenzollern imperial family and an active military figure in both world wars of the 20th century. Trained as a cadet in Schleswig‑Holstein, he distinguished himself early in the First World War as commander of the Grenadier Regiment „König Wilhelm I.“ (2. Westpreußisches) No. 7, receiving the Iron Cross in both classes and the wound badge for actions at Virton and Verdun. Contemporary accounts praised his leadership and bravery on the battlefield.

In the interwar period he faced public controversies, including mentions on lists alleging war crimes and criticism for applying for a pension from the republic. In the 1930s he accepted an honorary association with Nazi military structures, being appointed Generalmajor zur Verfügung, but was eventually sidelined as his family’s standing with the regime declined. Oskar and some of his brothers ultimately opposed Nazism.

As Master of the Knights of the Johanniterorden (Order of Saint John) from 1926 until his death, historians credit him with preserving the order during the Nazi cultural purges. He married Ina Maria von Bassewitz in 1914; the couple had four children. His health declined in later decades, and he died in 1958.
