About

A prince of the Romanov family, Constantine Constantinovich was known for his discreet manner and his cultural and military commitments. Educated at the prestigious Corps des Pages in Saint Petersburg, he was drawn to theater and reading but maintained a military career as an officer of the Izmaylovsky Regiment. Contemporary accounts describe him as modest, beloved by colleagues, and brave in the trenches during the First World War.

Although he wished to start a family, dynastic ties and political considerations prevented him from contracting the marriage he desired, a common situation among the high European nobility of the period. The transition from empire to revolution left him vulnerable: in 1918 he was deported to the Urals by the Bolsheviks.

Constantine Constantinovich was murdered with relatives in a mine near Alapayevsk, an episode that forms part of the tragedy experienced by many members of the former Russian elite during the Revolution. His later burial in Beijing and the subsequent destruction of the cemetery reflect the troubled fate of the Romanov family’s remains and material legacy in the twentieth century.
