About

A prince from the Catholic branch of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry, Ferdinand Philipp (known as Philipp) was prominent as a member of the high European aristocracy in the 19th century. A scion of important dynastic lines, he held military posts in the Austro-Hungarian army, fought in the Austro-Prussian War, and later served with the Hungarian hussars, remaining actively involved in the institutions of the Dual Monarchy.

In 1881 he inherited the headship of the House of Koháry and one of the largest fortunes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and he also took a seat in the Upper Chamber of Hungary. That social standing placed him at the center of Viennese court life, where he became known as a collector and scholar of numismatics, publishing articles on the subject and enriching collections with pieces acquired on travels around the world.

Married to Princess Louise Marie of Belgium, his marriage was marked by personal conflicts and ended in divorce after a scandal involving his wife. World War I severely affected his fortune and influence, leading him later into exile in Coburg, where he spent his final years. His legacy lies chiefly in his numismatic collections and his place within the dynastic networks that shaped the Europe of his time.
