About

Heir apparent to the throne of Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha by birth, Johann Leopold belonged to one of the European dynastic houses connected to the courts of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark and others. A son of Charles Edward, his life was affected by the loss of his dynastic rights after his father's abdication in 1918 amid the political changes in Germany following the First World War.

During the Second World War he remained in Germany but did not join the Nazi Party or serve in the Wehrmacht, living privately in Franconia. After the conflict he received family support and took the surname Wettin; he moved to Austria, where he rebuilt his professional and intellectual life.

He devoted himself to philately, becoming a noted scholar and collector in postwar Germany and the author of handbooks and studies on specialized topics, including Masonic philately. His legacy combines his dynastic origins with a recognized body of work in the field of philately.
