About

Maximilian William of Saxony was a prince of the House of Wettin who became notable for choosing a clerical life. A son of King George I of Saxony, he retained his dynastic titles by birth but renounced his succession rights and his apanage when he decided to enter the priesthood, despite his family's initial reservations. He earned a theology degree at the University of Würzburg and served as a parish priest in Nuremberg before accepting, in 1900, the chair of Canon Law at the University of Freiburg.

As a German‑language author and academic, he took part in significant ecclesiastical debates: in 1910 he provoked controversy by proposing changes to the terms of reconciliation between Orthodox and Catholic churches, a stance that prompted a request for clarification from Pope Pius X and led to his subsequent retraction. During the First World War he served as a military chaplain, ministering to the wounded and prisoners and providing spiritual care under adverse conditions.

After the fall of the Saxon monarchy he lived through the historical transition of his dynastic milieu until the end of his life, and is remembered for the uncommon combination of princely origin, an academic career in Canon Law, and pastoral dedication.
