About

Prince Christian Victor of Schleswig‑Holstein was a member of the British royal family and an officer in the British Army at the end of the 19th century. A grandson of Queen Victoria, he was the first prince of the family to attend a public school, being educated at Wellington, Magdalen College (Oxford) and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. His military career led him to serve in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, taking part in campaigns in India, the Ashanti expedition (Ghana), in the Sudan under Lord Kitchener, and in the Second Boer War.

A keen cricketer, he captained several school and university teams and uniquely took part in a first-class cricket match featuring members of the royal family. A decorated officer, he received several British and foreign orders and medals in recognition of his service.

He died in Pretoria in 1900 of enteric fever contracted during the South African campaign. His death as a young officer beloved at court inspired monuments and memorials at Windsor, Frogmore and Plymouth, and a biography published in 1903. Christian Victor’s legacy combines active military service, public visibility through his royal birth, and an unusual link between aristocratic society and sport.
