About

Princess Amelia of the United Kingdom was a member of the British royal family, the youngest daughter of King George III and Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg‑Strelitz. She grew up in a family marked by the early deaths of siblings and by repeated episodes of her father’s mental illness, circumstances that shaped her education and public exposure. Considered by many to be the king’s favorite daughter, she was treated with ceremony from an early age and learned royal protocol.

Throughout her life she suffered chronic health problems, showing signs of tuberculosis in adolescence and experiencing bouts of joint pain that led her to spend time at coastal residences seeking treatment. She spent periods in Worthing and Weymouth, places associated with her attempts at recovery.

In Weymouth she formed an emotional attachment to Charles FitzRoy, a relationship that never resulted in marriage because of the legal restrictions on royal marriages. The liaison influenced her personal life and the way she expressed herself in letters and confidences to her family.

Amelia’s life illustrates the constraints and expectations placed on princesses at the turn of the nineteenth century: a privileged social position, a closely watched private life, and fragile health, leaving behind an image of dignity and vulnerability within the royal household.
