About

Princess Louise Marie Amélie of Belgium was the eldest child of King Leopold II and Queen Marie Henriette, of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Raised in a strict, domestic environment, she married in 1875 her second cousin Prince Philipp of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, with whom she had two children; the marriage soon broke down because of personal incompatibilities.

Possessing a determined character, Louise refused to submit to a dynastically arranged marriage and took to frequenting the Viennese court, where her private life became the subject of public scandal. She became involved with the officer Geza Mattachich; the conflict with her husband led to her psychiatric commitment and a subsequent escape aided by Mattachich. After proving her sanity she obtained a divorce in 1906 and thereafter lived stateless.

The First World War and the loss of family resources ruined her fortune; she published memoirs about the European courts and died in relative poverty in 1924. In Belgium her name remains associated with Avenue Louise in Brussels, a public reminder of her complex and controversial figure.
