About

Princess Thyra of Denmark, born Thyra Louise Caroline Amalia Augusta Elisabeth (1880–1945), was a member of the Danish royal family, the sixth daughter of the future King Frederick VIII and Princess Louise of Sweden and Norway. She was raised in the royal residences of Copenhagen, including the Frederik VIII Palace at Amalienborg, and at the Charlottenlund retreat, growing up within the dynastic circle of the reign of Christian IX.

She remained unmarried and childless throughout her life, a circumstance that reflects the social constraints of the era: a relationship in 1901 with a court physician, Niels C. Ilsøe, ended with his dismissal, illustrating the limits placed on mixed-status unions for royal family members at that time. Later changes in the rules made less exalted marriages within the dynasty more acceptable, but Thyra did not marry.

She died on 2 November 1945 in her apartment on Amaliegade in Copenhagen. Her biography sheds light on the social and familial aspects of the Danish monarchy at the turn of the 20th century, highlighting the roles and restrictions faced by princesses of royal blood.
