About

Princess Isabelle Philippine Marie Hélène of France, known as Madame Isabelle, was a member of the French royal family and the younger sister of Louis XVI. Raised at Versailles after the early death of her parents, she received an excellent education focused on the arts, religion and the virtues expected of 18th‑century royalty, standing out particularly in drawing and religious devotion.

Endowed with a sensitive yet resolute character, she led a life of charity and compassion that won her the sympathy of many contemporaries. Despite diplomatic marriage proposals, she remained at the court of Versailles under her brother’s protection, receiving the domain of Montreuil as a royal gift.

During the French Revolution she stayed with her family, accompanying the king and queen in their final years. Captured amid the revolutionary events, she was condemned to death and executed in Paris during the Reign of Terror.

In the Roman Catholic tradition she is recognized as a Servant of God, and she is remembered for her attachment to the faith, her charitable works and her family loyalty in a time of political and social crisis.
