About

Augusta Frederica of Great Britain was a British princess, a granddaughter of George II and the elder sister of the future King George III. In 1764 she married Charles I, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, an arranged union for dynastic reasons that also brought her into closer cultural contact with Germany, although she retained distinctly English tastes and ties throughout her life.

As duchess consort, she occupied a public position marked by contrasts: she was warmly received by crowds during visits to England, yet she faced rivalries at court—most notably with Queen Charlotte—that affected her ceremonial standing and led to long periods of withdrawal. Her public conduct and personal preferences—contemporaries described them as “entirely English”—shaped how her family was viewed at the German courts.

Partly retreating to care for her children and devote herself to religious study, Augusta organized her household around her children’s education and private life, maintaining a retreat—Schloss Richmond—as a cultural and social refuge. Her public legacy intertwines European dynastic ties with the image of a British princess who, though living abroad, preserved her English identity and habits.
