About

Louisa Anne of Great Britain was a British princess, granddaughter of George II and sister of King George III. Raised in a reserved family environment by her mother, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, she became known for a life kept largely apart from court intrigue, devoted to quieter cultural pursuits because of her fragile health.

During the 1760s she was involved in dynastic marriage negotiations: she was at one point considered as a bride for the Danish heir, Prince Christian, and later received a proposal from Duke Adolph Frederick of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In both cases concerns about her health and the prospects for offspring led to other brides being chosen.

Weakened by an advanced form of tuberculosis, Louisa became an invalid after her sister’s departure and died young in 1768. Her burial in Westminster Abbey reflects her high position in the royal family and preserves her memory within the context of eighteenth-century European dynastic links.
