About

Helen of Greece and Denmark was a princess of Greek origin who became Queen Mother of Romania during the reign of her son Michael I (1940–1947). Born into the family of King Constantine I, she spent her childhood between Greece, the United Kingdom and Germany, and experienced the political ruptures and exiles that affected the Greek monarchy in the early decades of the twentieth century.

She married Prince Carol of Romania and had a single son, Michael. After her husband’s abandonment and renunciation, Helen took on a public role shaped by Romania’s political instability: initially separated and exiled, she returned to Bucharest as the European situation and the monarchy’s fortunes deteriorated.

During World War II, she and the king opposed the deportation of Jews and a full alliance with Nazi Germany; their humanitarian efforts to protect Romanian Jews later brought her international recognition. The fall of the monarchy and the imposition of the communist regime forced the family into exile in 1947.

In the postwar years she lived in Italy and then Switzerland, devoting herself to family, gardening and the study of Italian art until her death in 1982. Her legacy includes both her role as mother of the last king and the memory of her humanitarian actions during a time of repression.
