About

Princess Marie Viktoria Feodore Leopoldine of Hesse and by Rhine, known within the family as “May,” was the youngest daughter of Grand Duke Louis IV of Hesse and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. Born in Darmstadt, she is remembered in family recollections chiefly for the warmth she inspired among relatives and for the childhood beauty—dark hair and blue-green eyes—that made her a beloved figure at the Hessian court.

Her short life was marked by tragedy: at four years old she contracted diphtheria during an outbreak that affected several members of the family. Despite medical efforts and her mother’s care, she succumbed to the illness in November 1878 and was interred in the family mausoleum beside her mother, who died weeks later of the same disease.

The episode had a strong impact within the royal circle, deepening the family’s mourning and shaping its public memory. Marie’s early death helped reinforce an image of a family touched by loss, and her funerary statue—depicting her mother holding the child—became an emotive symbol of the generation’s affectionate and tragic legacy.
