About

Charlene Lynette Wittstock is a South African Olympic swimmer and, since her marriage to Albert II, Princess Consort of Monaco. She emerged as an elite athlete in the 1990s and 2000s: she won the South African Championship (1996), competed at the Sydney (2000) and Beijing (2008) Olympic Games, and claimed victories at international meets, including medals at the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games. Her sports career preceded her move into the public role of a member of the princely family.

As princess, Charlene has pursued an official schedule focused on representing the principality alongside the prince and on social and charitable initiatives. In 2012 she founded the Princess Charlene Foundation, dedicated to projects for children and the promotion of sport, and she holds several honorary positions in international organizations, including serving as a global ambassador for Special Olympics.

Born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, she adapted to Monegasque protocol—including conversion to Catholicism—and has been a public figure associated with the principality’s cultural and humanitarian diplomacy. Her public profile combines her athletic background with her institutional role at the court, with particular emphasis on work for disadvantaged children and sport.
