About

Maria Isabel Apolônia Casimira Francisca Xaveria of Saxony was a princess of the House of Wettin, born at Wilanów Palace in 1736. A daughter of the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland Augustus III and Archduchess Maria Josepha of Austria, she belonged to one of the most influential dynasties in eighteenth-century Europe, with close ties to the Habsburg court and other principal royal families.

Raised at the Dresden court, she received a broad cosmopolitan education, studying Latin, French, English, philosophy, geography, religion, drawing, music and dance. In her youth she took part in musical and theatrical performances staged by the court, reflecting the importance of the arts and culture in aristocratic formation at the time.

Although born into a dynastic context shaped by political marriages and transnational connections, Maria Isabel remained unmarried throughout her life and left no descendants. She lived until 1818, witnessing profound political and social changes in Europe that affected the monarchies and the traditional order to which she belonged.

Her legacy is chiefly genealogical and cultural: as a member of a large generation of the Saxon royal family, she helped maintain the dynasty’s presence in the courtly and artistic circles of the eighteenth century.
