About

Maria Anna Leopoldina Isabella Wilhelmina of Bavaria was a Bavarian princess and, by marriage, Queen Consort of Saxony from 1836 to 1854 during the reign of Frederick Augustus II. Born at the Munich court, she belonged to a prominent Central European royal family, was the twin sister of Princess Sophie of Bavaria, and a close relative of several nineteenth-century royal houses.

As consort, she was notable for her social work in times of crisis: during the severe famine that struck the Erzgebirge and Vogtland regions in 1836, she organized the first women’s relief committee to aid the hungry, an institution that later became established and remained active until 1932. This initiative illustrates her role in mobilizing sustained relief efforts.

She also commissioned the construction of the Gedächtniskapelle in 1855 and maintained a correspondence with the writer Ida de Hahn-Hahn, indicating cultural interests and patronage. The royal couple had no children; Maria Anna died in 1877 in Wachwitz, leaving a legacy primarily in Saxony’s philanthropic and cultural spheres.
