About

Johanna Marau Taʻaroa a Tepau Salmon, known as Queen Marau, was the last consort of the Kingdom of Tahiti, married to King Pōmare V. Born into a high-ranking Tahitian family with European ancestry on her father's side, she held a prominent role as head of the Teva clan, traditionally a rival of the Pōmare dynasty. Her upbringing included education in Sydney, which brought her into contact with cosmopolitan circles of the nineteenth‑century Pacific.

She married the heir to the throne while still very young and had three children; the marriage, marked by conflict and separations, ended in divorce in the 1880s amid the profound political and cultural pressures resulting from the French presence in the archipelago. Throughout her life she maintained an active social and intellectual life: she traveled to Europe, was received in Paris, and cultivated friendships with literary and artistic figures of the time.

Marau left published memoirs and a complex legacy: a symbol of a monarchy in transition, she embodied the tensions between local tradition and foreign influences in colonial Tahiti. She was honored by France as an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1924.
