About

Raymond Radiguet was a French writer whose brief career was notable for its stylistic maturity and the scandal surrounding his works. The son of a caricaturist, he joined the modernist circle in Paris at an early age and was under the mentorship and maintained an intense personal relationship with Jean Cocteau, in addition to contacts with figures such as Picasso and Max Jacob. He left his studies in adolescence to devote himself to journalism and literature.

His first novel, Le Diable au corps (1923), tells of an adulterous affair between a married woman and a sixteen-year-old boy during the First World War; the book provoked controversy because of its subject matter and was often read as largely autobiographical. Critical reception moved from skepticism in the face of vigorous promotion to recognition of Radiguet’s technical assurance and concise style.

A second novel, Le bal du Comte d’Orgel, was published posthumously in 1924; in addition to these books he published poetry and a play. Radiguet died prematurely at twenty of typhoid fever, leaving a short but influential body of work that inspired subsequent film adaptations and secured his notoriety in twentieth-century French literature.
