About

Rebecca Walker is an American writer, feminist, and activist recognized as a central voice of third-wave feminism since her influential 1992 essay in which she declared, “I am the Third Wave.” Her intellectual and public work addresses the intersections of race, gender, politics, power, and culture, and includes books, anthologies, and memoirs that articulate multiracial experiences, sexuality, and motherhood.

As an activist, Walker co-founded the Third Wave Fund, later the Third Wave Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting young women, Black people, and LGBTQIA+ communities through training, grants, and civic engagement; in its first year the initiative helped register tens of thousands of new voters. She also served as an editor at Ms. magazine and maintains a regular presence in the press and on media platforms.

Walker teaches and lectures at universities and international institutions on intergenerational feminism, multicultural identity, memoir writing, and media diversity. Her best-known works include the anthology To Be Real (1996) and the memoirs Black, White and Jewish (2000) and Baby Love (2007), which examine identity, family, and the tensions between career and motherhood.

Daughter of Alice Walker and a civil-rights lawyer, her personal life — including identifying as Black, White, and Jewish — informs much of her public reflection on identity and social justice.
