About

Reinhard Sorge was a German poet and playwright whose brief output left a deep mark on expressionist theatre. While still very young he wrote Der Bettler (The Beggar), a radically iconoclastic play that earned him the Kleist Prize in 1912 and anticipated surrealist and abstract staging techniques. The work is notable for its spatial experimentation and dramatic use of light, turning the stage into a “universe of the mind” rather than a mere realistic reproduction.

After a mystical experience and his conversion to Catholicism in 1913, Sorge directed his writing toward religious themes and actively promoted a revival of Catholic literature in the German-speaking world. This change alienated part of the avant-garde but also increased his influence on contemporary Christian poetics.

Drafted in 1915, he served on the Western Front and was killed in action at the Battle of the Somme in 1916 at the age of 24. Posthumously, Der Bettler received a landmark production directed by Max Reinhardt in 1917, consolidating Sorge’s legacy as a precursor of expressionist theatre and as a talent cut short by war.
