About

Remco Campert was one of the most influential Dutch writers and poets of the postwar period, known for his lyrical work and prose that blended humor, melancholy and urban observation. The son of fellow writer Jan Campert, he built a multifaceted career as a poet, columnist, short‑story and novel writer, and also as a comics artist and cartoonist for various newspapers and magazines.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s he published poetry collections and volumes of short stories that secured his literary reputation, and in 1961 he released the novel Het leven is vurrukkulluk, among his best‑known works. His output alternated between long periods of creative silence and prolific returns, while consistently keeping a colloquial, accessible style.

In subsequent decades he also established a presence in the national cultural scene: he contributed popular columns to newspapers and, together with Jan Mulder, wrote daily columns for years that became a touchstone for older readers. Campert’s legacy lies in the combination of colloquial language and poetic sensibility, which influenced generations of writers in the Netherlands.
