René Lalique

About

René Lalique was a French glassmaker, goldsmith and jeweler whose work defined the aesthetic of Art Nouveau and made a decisive contribution to Art Déco. Initially known for his naturalistic jewelry, Lalique innovated by applying artistic design to glass production, creating perfume bottles, vases, candelabra, clocks and architectural panels that combined refinement with functionality. He was a pioneer in treating luxury packaging as art objects and in conceiving serial production, broadening access to his aesthetic.

Founder of factories in Wingen-sur-Moder and other premises, Lalique patented technical processes—such as frosted and opalescent glass effects—and brought his pieces to monumental projects: the doors of the Hôtel Albert I, fountains on the Champs-Élysées, decorations for the SS Normandie and the Orient Express, and interiors of shops and palaces. During the two world wars he adapted his facilities to produce hospital supplies and support the war effort.

Recognized internationally, his legacy survives in the house he created and in his lasting influence on twentieth-century glass design and decorative objects.
