About

Richard A. Clarke is a national security specialist and former U.S. public official, known for his long service in counterterrorism and cybersecurity roles in the U.S. government. He served at the State Department during the 1980s and held senior positions in the White House from 1992 to 2003, including head of the Counterterrorism Security Group and, from 1998, National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Counterterrorism.

A prominent name after the September 11 attacks, Clarke became widely known for publishing memoirs critical of the government’s antiterrorism policies, testifying before the 9/11 Commission, and taking part in extensive media coverage. He also served as Special Advisor to the President for cyberspace security, a role that reflected his focus on the intersection of terrorism and digital threats.

After leaving the administration, he worked internationally on cybersecurity projects; later reports link parts of those programs to surveillance operations in sensitive contexts. His career is noted for influence on counterterrorism policymaking, contributions to debates about U.S. security priorities, and a controversial legacy regarding the extraterritorial impacts of technological initiatives.
