Richard Attenborough was a central figure in British cinema, with an established career as an actor, producer and director. He became internationally known for directing Gandhi, which earned him the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture, and for memorable roles such as entrepreneur John Hammond in Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, he began on the stage at a young age and moved between theatre and film over decades. In the late 1950s he co-founded the production company Beaver Films, broadening his behind-the-scenes role in the industry and taking an active part in British film production.
In addition to acting and directing, Attenborough held significant institutional positions: he served as president of BAFTA, RADA and the National Film and Television School, among other bodies, influencing cultural policy and the training of new professionals. He received numerous honors, including a CBE and a life peerage, and was recognized by critics and the public as one of the leading figures of British cinema.
His life also included service in the RAF during World War II and involvement in cultural and humanitarian causes. He died in 2014, leaving a lasting artistic and institutional legacy.
