About

Richard Beymer is an American actor, filmmaker, and visual artist whose career began in childhood and was established in the 1950s–60s. He became known for central roles in acclaimed film adaptations, notably as Peter van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and as Tony in West Side Story (1961), a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination. During the 1960s he led a variety of films and was under contract with major studios, but he gradually stepped away from conventional stardom.

In the late 1960s he turned to documentary and politically engaged cinema: he took part in the civil rights movement and made A Regular Bouquet: Mississippi Summer (1964), awarded for documenting efforts to register African American voters. In the 1970s he directed The Innerview, an experimental work that won him the Josef von Sternberg Award.

Over the following decades he alternated television acting — notably as Ben Horne in Twin Peaks (1990–1991, 2017) — with producing documentaries and other artistic work. He also published a semi‑autobiographical book and exhibited photographs, paintings, and sculptures. His career is marked by the shift from child star to independent creator and cultural activist.
