About

Richard Dobson was an American singer, songwriter and author associated with the outlaw country movement. Active from the 1970s, he moved in creative circles with Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley and Rodney Crowell, taking part in the scene that revitalized songwriter-driven country and appearing in contemporary documentaries and programs.

Over his career he released more than twenty albums between 1977 and 2016, including independent productions and collaborations with musicians such as Thomm Jutz. His song “Baby Ride Easy” became a standard recorded by multiple artists, and his compositions entered the repertoires of performers including Guy Clark, David Allan Coe and Nanci Griffith.

In addition to his musical work, Dobson wrote memoirs and newsletters documenting his life and his associations with central figures of Texas music; he published books such as The Gulf Coast Boys and Pleasures of the High Rhine. He also worked periodically outside the industry — on vessels and platforms — which influenced his daily life and repertoire.

He moved to Switzerland in 1999, where he lived until his death in 2017. His legacy endures in his discography, in songs adopted by colleagues, and in the chronicle of the alternative Texas country scene of the 1970s–1990s.
